Portland, Oregon. During one of their vacations, they visited their son, who lives in Hunters Creek. He has lived there since 2003. Al had severed an apprenticeship at Faulk Corporation – Steel Foundry. He then changed jobs to work at General Motors in Milwaukee. He retired after 32 years when the plant closed. He has been retired for 12 years.

Al has some very interesting hobbies. Al was a professional bowler. He has nine 300 games and a high 836 series. He played on the TV Pro Tour against the likes of Dick and Pete Weber. Spotlight Golfer: Mike Tapia

Mike was born in North Dakota but has lived in several states and other countries. His father was in the Air Force and he moved quite a bit as a family before finally settling in Arizona. His father’s family was originally from Arizona.  Mike has two brothers who were born in Germany. This is his second time living in Florida.  As a youngster he lived in Fort Walton Beach close to the Eglin Air Force base. He attended high school and college in Arizona and eventually moved to New Jersey where his wife-Jennifer is from. Jennifer and Mike married in New Jersey and have two amazing kids. Mike’s daughter, Marisol, is 7 and his son Lorenzo is 4.  Mike made his way to Hunters Creek a year and a half ago when Jennifer accepted a position as the Business Manager of Massage Envy Hunters Creek. She was recently named Manager of the Year for the entire company and she’s doing great things here in Hunter’s Creek for not only the business but the community.

Mike has been fortunate enough to play some great golf courses.  One that comes to mind is a Jack Nicklaus designed course that he played in a little known town in Mexico called Puerto Penasco. It was an extremely unique experience to play a course carved out of the desert landscape and sitting right on the water.  He will never forget the amazing desert mountain views running into the Sea of Cortez.

Mikes golf game is pretty much self-taught.  When he was in 6th grade, his family lived next to a gentleman who made golf clubs out of his garage.  Mike started mowing his lawn every week and one day he made Mike a set of clubs and that was it.  He remembers back in the day watching VHS videos of Jack Nicklaus: Golf My Way.  Mike played a lot for the next few summers but didn’t play too much during high school and college because of other sports -big mistake. He did pick it up again when he was about 24 and never looked back.

Mike has been working at Hunter’s Creek Golf Club since February, 2017.  Golf is his passion and it’s been a pleasure working where he lives and interacting with the golfers and the community.  Mike loves the Hunters Creek Golf Course and likes being part of bringing it back to its former glory. Prior to coming to Hunter’s Creek, Mike was a hospitality professional and managed resort and hotel properties for Hilton, IHG and Marriott.  As far as hobbies go, if you don’t see Mike on the golf course you’ll probably find him riding bikes with the kids or playing basketball at Mallard or Vista Park. Mike has also been known to dabble in the culinary arts. If you need a recipe, let him know.

His wife, Jenny, has played with him a few times but prefers to caddie for him. When they go on vacation, she doesn’t mind tending the flag and picking out clubs for Mike as long as he makes sure that her glass of bubbly is full. His daughter, Marisol, will be starting First Tee next month and there isn’t a day that goes by that his son, Lorenzo, doesn’t beg him to take him on the golf cart. Lorenzo will be a golfer for sure.

One of Mike’s greatest moments is Tiger’s 97 Masters. To watch him blow away the field and to have his parents there with him, must have been quite a thrill.  Mike was 19 at the time and that made a big impression on him.  That was sports at its highest level.

Mike started playing in the Tuesday league a couple of months ago.  He enjoys meeting and playing with all the players. The comradery within the league has been great and he looks forward to winning more awards. He has met some great people in the league and it’s been a fantastic experience. Mike is a golfer to watch out for. He has an excellent game and is always working to improve. Mike looks forward to seeing everyone around the golf club. Let him know if there’s anything he can to do help make Hunter’s Creek Golf the best it can be!

Mike has always enjoyed the quote from Shawshank Redemption when Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) said “Get busy living or get busy dying.”  That speaks to Mike because he is a very positive person and he always tries to live life to its fullest.
